Sand As Medium: One Spirit, Two Paradigms
Ryoanji: within the sand: in the large.
| "The gardens, which were infused with the Zen
spirit, were designed to be experienced from a position in which the
viewer himself was as balanced as the arrangement before him. Such
a position was a seated point of rest; you were not required to move
into the garden -it could be viewed as a complete image from the
point of your own equilibrium." (Mark Holborn). |
Sisyphus & Ulysses: without the sand: in the small.
| "I wanted to get back to you to tell you that I enjoyed visiting your site. I was especially moved by
the "sand and movement" pieces -they are sublime. I have been sitting Zen at the Montreal Zen center for over ten years
now. Though I am curious to see new works of art that have elements of Zen, I have always been a traditionalist. So
normally if some were to speak to me of mechanically created sculptures in the Zen tradition, I would be sceptical. But
after seeing your pieces, ("virtually" speaking), I believe they truly contain the elements of space serenity and "still
movement" which reflect the inner spirit of the Zen." (Nicholas). |
