Sand As Medium: Sisyphus & Ulysses: Introduction
Preliminary instances of Jean-Pierre Hébert's "Digital Sand
As Medium" concept --Sisyphus,
have been realized by Ho.
A second generation of interactive sand pieces has been completed
--Ulysses, realized by Jean-Pierre Hébert, and a third is under
way. The animations 'As time goes by' and 'Carpe Diem' are each a one step introduction to the work/medium. 'As time goes by' was given away as a flip book at the Siggraph'99 Art Gallery. Sisyphus and Ulysses simply etch in the sand in the zen tradition of Karesansui as seen in many temples of Japan, but these etchings happen under computer control (One Spirit, Two Paradigms). Ulysses gives the beholder the opportunity to interact with the sand. The main icon of these pages shows a recent sand etching by Sisyphus; the original is about four square feet. This site informs about Digital Sand As Medium origins and its underlying tradition. Sisyphus and Ulysses are shown as a piece, and the sand etchings are explained. Some are displayed in two galleries according to their style. Then the site addresses Sand As Medium, Ulysses news, future plans, notes, questions, and contact matters.
